Dental insurance follow-up is a support seat, not a chatbot receptionist

6 min read

Most dental "AI" pitches start at the front desk. A voice agent that books cleanings. A chatbot that answers "are you open Saturday."

That is not where the money is leaking in a 20–80 person group.

The expensive seat is the person who lives in insurance follow-up: denied claims, missing attachments, eligibility, and the pile of "we'll resubmit" that never quite gets resubmitted. The owner already pays for that person. Leverwork is built to run that seat, not to replace the person who greets patients.

The door is the calculator.

The seat, named plainly

In a typical group practice the support/AR person is doing some mix of:

  • Eligibility checks before the chair, so the office does not eat a surprise write-off
  • Claim submit, reject, correct, resubmit — the loop that eats afternoons
  • EOB posting that does not match what the PMS thinks went out
  • Patient-balance follow-up that is really "the insurer still hasn't paid"
  • Phone time with payers that a receptionist cannot finish between check-ins

A chatbot receptionist does not close that loop. Liability and compliance for that product is a different article: AI Receptionist: The Liability and Compliance Side. This post is the support seat.

Why owners buy the wrong thing

Receptionist replacement is visible. Patients notice. Instagram notices. Insurance follow-up is invisible until collections sag.

If you already have a human on AR, you do not need a new front-of-house toy. You need the queue run: every denial coded, every missing attachment requested, every aging bucket touched on a schedule the office manager can audit.

That is a full back-office role. Leverwork deploys a worker against that role. It is not a template and not a bot you paste into the website.

The owner math (illustrative, labeled)

Use the insurance-follow-up coordinator's actual loaded seat cost, including wages, benefits, and employer costs.

Live Standard: Talk to us for current pricing, up to 2 FTE roles. Target go-live: about 30 days from kickoff. Your timeline is set in your SOW.

Illustrative (not a client result): if Standard covers follow-up and a second adjacent seat (eligibility, statement generation), you are comparing one partnership to two salaries. Run the practice's actual wages in the calculator.

If the group has several PMS + clearinghouse + imaging systems that all have to agree, that is Complex (Talk to us). Same offer, more seats.

Who this is for

Owners of dental groups and practices in the 20–80 range who already pay for insurance follow-up or billing support. Not DSO headquarters with a 200-person billing factory. Not CPA firms.

Industry hub: dental.

Next step

Calculate the support seat. If the math holds, Standard is the usual starting point. Talk to us for current pricing.
